About me

I’m the author of five historical fantasy romance novels about the ancient Celts and Romans, originally published by Orion and Bantam.

They’re for you if you love sexy romance, epic battles, retellings of Celtic myths, ancient forests, Scottish and Irish lore, seers, prophecies, priestesses and always – despite gorgeous sword-wielding warriors – the sisterhood. You can see I love to write, to blab, to over-emote!

As an archaeology grad, I love making a big ol’ layer cake: well-researched history and sweeping myths and romantic love, bravery and sacrifice, and the magical landscapes of Scotland and Ireland, and Celtic spirituality, with seers and the sidhe (Scottish and Irish faeries and fae – though not as you know them.) I have it all. Because… I love it all!

Oh, go on then - a potted history? Deep breath.

Born in the Land of Oz. Wrote fairy stories. Studied very old things. Drove one of those huge trucks on a gold mine. Travelled to the land of my ancestors. Fell in soul-deep-love with Scotland.

Fell into past-life dreams (memories?) on misty Scottish cliffs and in ancient forests. Used all that I am and was and want to be (brave, powerful, taken by love), poured it into a trilogy. And a duology. Got published. Had a baby. Got a bee-oot-iful cat. Lived in Australia, England, Australia, Scotland, the United States, Scotland, then England again.

The thing, deep down, that drives my writing

I became obsessed with prehistory the moment my uni lecturer pranced across the room pretending to be an ice age deer with antlers. I became obsessed with the Celts the moment I sat on a cliff on the far west side of the far western island of Scotland. Mist brushed my cheeks. The sea murmured. Along the cliffs, sheep bleated. And then…I almost heard oars splashing. The cascade of an ancient language. I almost saw a dark ship parting the mist, the flash of a pale sail amid the fog. Was it memory?

In that moment, the desire to write about ancient Scotland kindled in my heart. I got up and came across Mr MacGregor, the farmer. His sheepdog darted around my feet, and I scratched its head as he spoke to it in musical Gaelic. And I was just…enchanted.

Writing my first book, I realized this: as a modern woman, life in the patriarchy can be hard. But what if you were a woman in the past, when brute male force, lawlessness and religion all conspired to rule your life, if not threaten it? How do you find the power to forge your own fate?

My heroines wield all that they have: politics, money, bloodlines, birth, spirituality, magic, courage, kindness, intelligence, daring… and of course, sex and love. To find out who they truly are. To make their life their own.

And that became my true obsession.
